Hospice Home Frequently Asked Questions

Hospice is a philosophy of care. The goal is to make terminally ill patients as comfortable as possible wherever they are.

A doctor makes the decision on what level of care a patient requires. Our RiverStone Health Hospice Home offers around-the-clock care. A patient may be admitted to hospice needing one level of care and be transferred to other levels of care as their needs change.

Our Hospice Home provides a home-like alternative to hospital care for terminally ill patients and their families. The RiverStone Health Hospice Home provides the very best individualized inpatient clinical care. Each room is specifically designed and specially built for those who are approaching the end-of-life.

Most patients receive our services where they live. Some patients may develop physical or emotional symptoms or medical needs so complex that routine care is difficult to provide in their homes. These patients may find the best care at our Hospice Home where the medical staff can rapidly adjust care plans to achieve patient comfort. After a few days, patients may be able to return home, or they may continue to live at the RiverStone Health Hospice Home. With inpatient care, nurses are available around-the-clock to administer medications, treatments and emotional support to make the patient more comfortable.

Some examples of situations in which patients might be best treated for a short while at the RiverStone Health Hospice Home include:

  • When patients experience sudden and/or severe symptoms such as pain, anxiety or agitation, they may benefit from an increased level of care where their medicine and treatment can be adjusted more accurately to reflect their needs. Their time at the Hospice Home is based on how quickly their comfort can be restored.
  • When caregivers can no longer adequately care for the patient at home. In such cases, patients often stay at the Hospice Home while other arrangements are made.
  • When caregivers need some respite from the demands of caring for a terminally ill patient. Medicare provides coverage for up to five consecutive days of respite care at the Hospice Home. Patients may have multiple “respite stays.”
  • Managing pain and other symptoms to ease suffering.
  • Supporting patient and family through the emotional, psychosocial and spiritual aspects of dying.
  • Providing medications, medical supplies and equipment.
  • Teaching family members, if desired, the skills needed to care for their family member.
  • Offering counseling for patient and family to cope with end-of-life issues, assist with understanding Medicare and Medicaid.
  • Delivering special services such as speech, occupational and physical therapy if needed to improve the quality-of-life.
  • Providing short-term inpatient care available when pain or other symptoms become too difficult to manage at home.
  • Five-day respite care available to provide a short rest for the family.
  • Providing grief support and counseling after the patient’s death.
