We offer a distinctive opportunity for medical residents to immerse themselves in full-spectrum, rural family medicine within the dynamic setting of Eastern Montana.
Located in historic Miles City, our program provides hands-on experience in inpatient and outpatient medicine, emergency care, obstetrics, pediatrics, geriatrics, and procedural skills essential to rural practice.
Residents benefit from a supportive, close-knit community and the opportunity to build long-term relationships with patients and local healthcare teams.
With a focus on innovation, service and rural resilience, the Frontier Training Program fosters physicians who are not only clinically excellent, but also deeply connected to the communities they serve.
We welcome applicants who are mission-driven and eager to lead in rural healthcare.

Family Medicine Physician, Billings Clinic Miles City
Designed to prepare future family physicians for the unique challenges and rewards of frontier healthcare, this program integrates advanced clinical training with a strong commitment to community engagement and continuity of care.
Residents have the opportunity for patient care across service lines, and continuity with visiting specialists like cardiology, nephrology and orthopedics, with an emphasis in prenatal and OB care.
The program is affiliated with the Montana Family Medicine Residency (MFMR) and maintains the same rigorous academic standards while emphasizing the adaptability, independence and leadership required in frontier settings.
Residents spend their intern year at RiverStone Health in Billings, Montana, a state-of-the-art federally qualified health center (FQHC) that provides comprehensive outpatient care to underserved populations. RiverStone Health also serves as the public health department for Yellowstone County, offering residents a unique opportunity to engage in public health alongside their clinical training.
Interns also gain robust inpatient experience at two regional Level I trauma centers in Billings—Billings Clinic and Intermountain Health St. Vincent Regional Hospital—which serve patients across a 500-mile radius.
Second- and third-year residents then go to Holy Rosary Healthcare in Miles City, working with all three medical partners in full-spectrum family medicine in Eastern Montana’s medical hub.
It boasts easy access to outdoor adventures in the badlands of Eastern Montana, including hiking, biking, camping, hunting and river sports.
State parks nearby include Makoshika, Medicine Rocks and Pirogue Island.
It is also home to the annual World Famous Miles City Bucking Horse Sale, known as “Cowboy Mardi Gras”.
