About MFMR

Welcome to Montana Family Medicine Residency

Welcome to the Montana Family Medicine Residency (MFMR) in Billings, MT!

For 30 years, the Montana Family Medicine Residency (MFMR) has been transforming healthcare in our region. As Montana’s first family medicine residency program and a proud member of the University of Washington’s WWAMI network, MFMR has played a pivotal role in training skilled, versatile, and compassionate family physicians who provide evidence-based care in diverse and often underserved settings.

What sets our program apart is a combination of strong clinical training in a nationally recognized educational environment. Our continuity clinic, housed at RiverStone Health Clinic, is a state-of-the-art federally qualified health center (FQHC) that provides comprehensive outpatient care to underserved populations. RiverStone Health also serves as the public health department for Yellowstone County, offering residents a unique opportunity to engage in public health alongside their clinical training.

MFMR residents also gain robust inpatient experience at two regional Level I trauma centers—Billings Clinic and Intermountain Health St. Vincent Regional Hospital—which serve patients across a 500-mile radius. Additional opportunities include rural rotations, engagement with Native American populations, work with the Veterans Administration, and educational opportunities for learners from high school through medical school. Residents may also choose to pursue specialized training tracks in Wilderness Medicine, Obstetrics, and Public Health Advocacy. Our faculty are recognized local leaders with broad expertise and a deep commitment to mentoring and educating the next generation of family physicians.

Located in Billings—Montana’s largest city with a population of about 120,000—MFMR offers the best of both worlds: The amenities of a growing urban center with the warmth and community spirit of a small town. Residents enjoy easy access to outdoor recreation, including the Beartooth Mountains, Yellowstone National Park, and ski destinations like Red Lodge. Our program values teamwork, hosts regular wellness events, and fosters a supportive family-like atmosphere.

If you’re looking to train in full-spectrum family medicine under Montana’s Big Sky, we’d love to hear from you!
