Research & Scholarly Activity
The residency trains physicians to be expert users and authors of medical evidence. MFMR is in full compliance with the requirements for resident and faculty scholarly activity outlined by ACGME and AOA.
Scholarly Activity Projects
All residents must engage in scholarly activity. MFMR has developed a point-based system in which residents will receive scholarly activity points depending upon the difficulty or quality of a given project. Residents must complete 7 points to graduate.
Examples of scholarly activity:
- Co-authoring with a faculty member a “Help Desk Answer” with the Family Physicians Inquiries Network (FPIN) for “Evidence-Based Practice,” a peer-reviewed journal (7 points)
- Presenting at state or national meetings (5-10 points)
- Presenting at a local Grand Rounds or Poster Showcase (3 points)
- Authoring health-related articles for newspapers (2 points)
Presentations
Resident physicians regularly present case conferences drawing on their experiences in the areas of pediatrics, pediatric emergency medicine, obstetrics and ambulatory care. In their third year, resident physicians also lead an Evidence Club, which may be based on the content of their scholarly activity projects.
Conferences
Each year, MFMR sends resident physicians to the Family Medicine Residents and Students National Conference (Kansas City), the Montana Academy of Family Physicians Chico Primary Care Conference, and the Montana Osteopathic Medical Association CME Meeting. In addition, residents are encouraged to submit posters and papers for presentation at other state, regional, national and international meetings.
Academics and Supervision Rotation
Upper-level residents coach and supervise new interns in the areas of hospital systems, hospital EMRs, and application of evidence-based medicine to the point of care. The academics and supervision resident also helps develop the academic content for the morning report of our inpatient Family Medicine Teaching Service.
Resident Award for Scholarship
MFMR is proud to partner with the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors (AFMRD), the North American Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG), and the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) to provide international recognition for one resident physician each year who has completed outstanding family medicine scholarship.
